With Rio de Janeiro hosting an ATP 500 this week, some of the sport’s biggest stars have transcended the Brazilian city. Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti and Dominic Thiem all line up, wasting little time enjoying the sounds and sights of Rio.

Top seed Alcaraz enjoyed a helicopter tour and snapped photos of Christ the Redeemer, an iconic statue that is a symbol of Christianity around the world. The Spaniard, who is set to begin his title defense at Tuesday’s Claro-presented Rio Open against Brazilian Mateus Alves, then headed to Sugar Loaf, where he rode the cable car.

“The moment in the helicopter was spectacular,” said Alcaraz, who triumphed in Buenos Aires last week. “It was my first time flying in a helicopter. I was a bit scared at the beginning, but it passed really quickly. Living everything from above is incredible.

“Seeing the Savior from the helicopter was wonderful. In the past I’ve said it would be awesome to see this from the sky and it has exceeded my expectations.”

2017 champion Dominic Thiem attended the Rio Carnival alongside Rafael Matos and David Vega Hernandez. The trio danced to music and watched the costumed parade through the streets.

“Everyone around the world knows the Rio Carnival. It will be a unique experience and I’m looking forward to it,” said Thiem upon arrival. “The stadium is already full, let’s see how it will be.”

“It’s a unique experience,” said the Brazilian Matos. “I used to watch it on TV and to be able to witness it is incredible. We will enjoy today and then focus on the tournament.”

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti opted for a more relaxed day, spending time at the beach.
