After ending nearly a month with an injury and missing the final 11 games before entering the All-Star break, Pelicans rookie Dyson Daniels could make his big return Thursday in Toronto. Just as he is listed as likely for tonight’s duel against the Raptors, so is veteran Larry Nance Jr.
The injury list at the New Orleans camp has been chock-full in recent months, including EJ Liddell, who is recovering from an ACL in his right knee, G-League two-wayer Deron Seabron and, of course, star Zion Williamson. The latter was due to return right after All-Star Weekend but has suffered a setback in his process and won’t be returning for at least a couple of weeks.

Daniels’ possible return to court means nothing but bad news for opposing offenses. Although he’s only 19, he’s already proven to be great at using his length without fouling, locating the basketball and navigating screens. There is no doubt that he will become a special defender in this league.
Also, Dyson Daniels is often tasked with defending the opposing team’s best player thanks to his ability to overcome screens, his superb footwork and great off-the-ball technique. The rookie is producing at least 1 steal per game and is rebounding 3.5 this season.
As for his attacking qualities, his stats are impressive as he is expected to only improve with age. After averaging just 19.9 minutes in 39 competitions this season, he has averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 assists per game. What stands out most is his efficiency, having dropped 44.5% of his field goal attempts so far.
One of his best performances of the tournament also came from a match against the Raptors in November. The guard had 14 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds that night in New Orleans.

After being sidelined with a right ankle sprain, we’re hoping it’s time for Daniels to put his uniform back tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET in the Canadian city. Meanwhile, reserve center Larry Nance Jr. appears to have recovered from his left core muscle injury after missing just a few games for his club.
The big man is obviously less influential than Daniels this season, but he’s a regular rotation player for New Orleans. The 30-year-old has played in 48 games in this championship so far, playing an average of 22.7 minutes. He was able to drop 8 points per contest and add 6 rebounds and 1.9 assists by the all-star break.
Arguably his best performance in recent games came on Jan. 31, when he scored 13 points for the Pelicans in just 21 minutes on the field against Denver, as his efficiency on field goal attempts this season sits at a hefty 61.9% . He also got 11 rebounds that night because the center is a six-foot-tall man.
