Brennan JohnsonBrennan Johnson was one of three World Cup players to start for Forest

An inspired performance by Brennan Johnson helped Nottingham Forest defeat Blackburn at Ewood Park and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The striker gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot, but Blackburn equalized through Scott Wharton just before half-time.

Jesse Lingard’s deflected free-kick restored Forest’s lead before a Taiwo Awoniyi strike completed the three.

Johnson scored a second late to complete an impressive performance.

Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson made 11 changes from the team that beat Norwich City on Saturday and the Championship promotion chasers – currently third in the Second Division – have struggled to contain Forest. and especially Johnson.

The striker, who played in all three of Wales’ games in Qatar and was one of three World Cup players to start for Forest, won the penalty in the 12th minute by drawing a foul from Wharton before hitting Aynsley Pears sent the wrong direction.

Despite 16 shots in the first half, Forest failed to extend their lead and was pushed back just before the break when Wharton headed home a free-kick from younger brother Adam.

However, Steve Cooper’s side from the Premier League maintained their momentum after half-time and regained the lead when Lingard’s free-kick was deflected twice before rolling past Pears.

Awoniyi then secured Forest’s progress by taking Lingard’s incisive pass, rolling away from Wharton and calmly passing Pears, who made several good saves to keep the result respectable.

Johnson secured the win in added time by shooting past Pears straight from the box.

The win secures Forest a spot in the EFL Cup Quarter-Finals draw, which will take place on Thursday night.
