England and Arsenal winger Beth Mead has won BBC Sports Personality of the Year after winning the Women’s Euros and the tournament’s Golden Boot in 2022.

The 27-year-old, who becomes the first female footballer to win the award, scored six goals as the Lionesses battled for their first major trophy this summer, beating Germany 2-1 in extra time at Wembley to lift Euro 2022.

She has also been in fine form for Arsenal, completing an impressive turnaround for the winger after being left out of the Team GB squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

However, she recently tore her cruciate ligament during Arsenal’s WSL defeat by Manchester United three weeks ago.

Mead received the award ahead of cricketer Ben Stokes, curler Eve Muirhead, gymnast Jessica Gadirova, snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan and athlete Jake Wightman.

The England women’s soccer team won the Team of the Year award after their stunning Euro 2022 triumph, while Sarina Wiegman was confirmed as Coach of the Year.

Wiegman only began her tenure as England team manager in September 2021, having guided her native country, the Netherlands, to the same title in 2017.

Analysis: Mead’s sensational climb crowned with a SPOTY award

Charlotte Marsh from InNewCL Sports:

“If you’d asked Mead a year ago what her predictions for 2022 were, she might have struggled to name even half of the incredible moments she’s witnessed over the past 12 months.

“2021 will arguably be remembered for their Olympic disappointment. But 2022 has often been dubbed the ‘Beth Mead Revenge Tour’ – and the music has finally reached its crescendo with a well-deserved BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

“Winning the Euros in July will always be the highlight of the year. A first major title for the Lionesses, the first major trophy an England senior team has won against old foes Germany in front of a sell-out Wembley since 1966. A football fairy tale can’t come much better.

“And Mead was one of the Lionesses’ standout stars. Her six goals and five assists earned her her way to the Golden Boot, scoring half of England’s goals at the tournament and being named Player of the Tournament. She went on to earn her 50th cap in England in November and at the age of 27 can easily reach her century.

Beth Mead in 2022

“It was a mix of Jonas Eidevall and Sarina Wiegman’s management that Mead finally achieved its potential. She was directly involved in 37 goals in 23 games under the Dutch manager and she was just as effective for Arsenal.

“She has 10 goals and eight assists in WSL games in 2022, while accumulating 61 shots and making 35 tackles, which shows how effective she can be in other areas of her game.

“Unfortunately, it will be a while before we see Mead light up the pitch again. A cruciate ligament injury sustained a few weeks ago has certainly ruled her out for much of the season, leaving her out of the World Cup next summer.

“But there’s no denying that the latest accolade in her trophy cabinet is the perfect way to cap a sensational rise, with no doubt Mead will come back even stronger in 2023.”
