Arsenal and Manchester City have been accused by the Football Association of failing to check their players during Wednesday’s Premier League game.

Both groups of players surrounded referee Anthony Taylor at different times during the game at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal protested when Erling Haaland was awarded a penalty by City, a decision then overturned by VAR.

City were unhappy with the decision to concede a first-half penalty and later foul by Eddie Nketiah to Arsenal.

Nketiah was shown a yellow card for fighting City’s Ruben Dias.

In a statement, the FA saidexternal link: “It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players behaved properly, with Arsenal players surrounding the match official in the 56th minute and Manchester City in the 42nd and 64th minutes.”

Both clubs have until Tuesday to comment on the allegations.

The FA has announced attempts for grassroots referees to wear body cams to prevent abuse towards officials.

FA chief Mark Bullingham said he hopes this will have a “positive impact” on behaviour.

In a recent InNewCL poll, hundreds of referees said they feared for their safety.
