The latest report by Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple could delay or postpone the iPhone SE 4 to 2024 due to current market conditions.

According to some sources familiar with Apple’s supply chain, the third-generation iPhone SE (2022) hasn’t sold very well. To make matters worse, Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected Apple analyst, has reported that Apple may even consider canceling its successor, the iPhone SE 4 (2023), or at least delaying it by a year to 2024 .

According to Kuo, Apple could “cancel or postpone the iPhone SE 4 2024 mass production plan.” The analyst claims low demand for the cheaper devices is likely the reason why Apple might consider such a move. Currently, the “affordable” lineup includes devices like the iPhone SE 2022, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 mini.

Previous rumors claimed that Apple has not fared well with the current generation of iPhone SE models. The company went so far as to cut production significantly to cut costs and meet low demand. Kuo also mentioned that the reason for canceling or postponing the device next year could be concerns about the full-screen design, which could increase costs for both consumers and Apple.

If Apple were to increase the price of the iPhone SE 4, it could be considered too high by customers, and demand could be even lower than expected, resulting in even bigger losses for Apple. For reference, the iPhone SE 3 (2022) is already priced at $439 in the US, while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 mini are the cheapest devices, still selling today starting at $599. As a countermeasure, the only logical step seems to be for Apple to delay or discontinue the device altogether, or change its plans in order to see a return on investment.

Due to the global economic recession, it would be reasonable to think that Apple could delay the device until 2024 and continue offering the iPhone SE 3 (2022) over the next calendar year to maintain profitability – even if it has to make further adjustments and cease production for the Lower SE devices. That sounds reasonable given Apple maintains its devices for four to five years and the iPhone SE 3 is at least three years away from its lifespan. The device could continue to be an excellent choice for those on a tighter budget looking to stay or switch within the Apple ecosystem.

iPhone XR design meets SE

Earlier this year, we reported that YouTuber Jon Prosser claimed that Apple could announce the new iPhone SE with the same form factor and design as the iPhone XR. For reference, the iPhone XR was announced back in October 2018 and featured a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD display and was powered by the Apple 12 Bionic with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of base storage. The phone features a single 12-megapixel rear camera and a 7-megapixel front shooter.

If Apple were to update this device, we’d expect the A15 Bionic chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of base storage, and the same 12MP camera used on the standard iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Assuming Apple kept the same design, it could also pack the same 2,942mAh battery, support 20W wired charging and 7.5W Qi wireless charging.

Would you consider buying the current-gen iPhone SE as its successor might be more than a year away, or would you rather save up and buy an older flagship like the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13? Let us know in the comments below.
