After his recent victory over the cliffs, a three-set thriller in Doha against Lorenzo Sonego, Andy Murray says he has more confidence in his body than at any time in his career.
That’s quite a statement from a man playing with a titanium-infused hip, after moderately successful hip surgery in January 2018 and another full resurfacing in January 2019. Throw in the fact that Murray is 35 and 36 years old old it is nothing short of remarkable – but true.
Here’s what Murray said on Monday after saving three match points in the third set to defeat Italy’s Sonego.
“I’ve been training really well since Melbourne,” he said. “Since the end of last season, I’ve been physically demanding. Obviously I’ve seen the benefits of that in Australia and the games I’ve played and I’ve tried to continue down that path as much as possible.
Murray said the experience of three grueling straight games in Australia (his second-round win over Thanasi Kokkinakis was a matter of five hours and 45 minutes that ended at 4:05am) made him stronger than ever.
That experience, he says, made Monday’s two-hour, 30-minute fight seem like a breeze.
“Even though tonight’s game was 7-6 in the third and it lasted two and a half hours, the fact that I was able to play almost five hours against Berrettini and then be physically able to handle another really long game afterwards gave me a lot more Confidence in my body, maybe more than I’ve ever had in my career, to be honest.
“That’s because I haven’t had a lot of those experiences of playing four hours and 50 minutes and then playing a really long game after that. So that was really positive for me. I physically knew I would be fine.”
