Scott Arfield’s amazing stoppage-time brace gave Rangers a dramatic win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership and prevented their fragile title hopes from being further splintered.

Stunning goals from Duk and Leighton Clarkson had given Aberdeen the lead as the game went on for seven more minutes, while Fashion Sakala had previously given Rangers the lead.

But Arfield followed up when goalkeeper Kelle Roos spilled Ryan Kent’s shot, then used a defensive error to bundle a frantic winner.

That puts Rangers six points behind Celtic, who play Livingston on Wednesday, although it looked likely they would be at least eight points behind Celtic after playing a game more.

And it gives new manager Michael Beale a huge boost after notching two 3-2 comeback wins in his first two games in charge.

Aberdeen remains third but was completely devastated. Manager Jim Goodwin huddled on the ground in disbelief as he watched his side manage to throw away what appeared to be their first win in 13 attempts against Rangers.

The Pittodrie side took much criticism for their defensive approach against Celtic on Saturday when they finally lost to a late goal, but after a sluggish first 20 minutes, which saw Sakala smash in on the second try, they revived and took control.

Duk’s unorthodox free-kick wrong-footed Allan McGregor and they leveled just before half-time, which they deserved no less in a lively and full-blooded nine-yellow card battle.

And Goodwin’s side came out with the momentum behind them after the restart and took the lead when Liverpool loanee Clarkson swept the falling ball into the corner to reinforce his growing climax role.

But Beale made four changes – including bringing Arfield on – and Rangers grew back into the game as Aberdeen fell deeper with something to hold on to.

They were five minutes from a win but goalkeeper Kelle Roos spilled Kent’s 20-yard shot and Arfield reacted quickest to ram home and the midfielder lurked again as Anthony Stewart and Jayden Richardson failed to process Malik Tillman’s cross and his shot hammered into the ground and over Roos.

Beale spoke of a major “mentality week” for Rangers and his team eventually responded. But Aberdeen’s mentality of throwing away such a promising position that they had worked so hard to acquire is being questioned.
