With every single video that comes out for this film, I’m becoming more and more convinced that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is just an amalgamation of the most common pitfalls in a given D&D campaign. Is it just as fun watching it on screen as playing it with friends? That remains to be seen. But first have fun with Chris Pine’s bard, who makes a fool of himself in a cemetery.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves | Questions for a Corpse Clip (2023 Movie)
Oh, Edgin, you beautiful fool. You can’t be that beautiful without your intelligence score suffering as a result. Simon the Wizard was very clear; You can ask the corpse five questions. And what are you doing?
Big D&D nerds will argue about whether or not wizards can cast speak to dead (traditionally a cleric spell) and whether or not it should burn incense, but whatever. The fact remains that they’re in a graveyard that looks like a Sam Raimi set from Army of Darkness, talking shit to an animated corpse in what might be the biggest fanservice interaction we’ve seen in the film to date . This might actually violate the “No Meta” rule, which the directors said wouldn’t happen, but I won’t blame them. After all, rules are arbitrary.
Am I convinced this movie will be funny? No. Am I sure this movie will take a ride and a half trying to overcome the pitfalls of trying to narratively explain all of the arbitrary rules of D&D to a mass audience? Yes. There’s a huge difference between creating boundaries in a combat simulator and seeing them play out on screen, but I’m sure it will be an absolute journey to watch the movie that attempts to explain spell slots.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hits theaters on March 31st.
